Protests, Discussions, and the Fair!
As I'm typing this, the thermometer outside my window reads 100 degrees. The "official" temperature on my computer screen is "only" 96, but it's clear this is not normal June weather. In fact, all over the world, temperatures are soaring beyond the records. People are dying. Forests are burning. It's well past time that we do something, yet the current politicians refuse.
This past month, we've been lobbying the Bowling Green City Council to include solar in the $100,000 they're about to spend on a consultant to study Bowling Green's grid. They have refused. They are afraid to even study the solutions we need, probably because they know an honest study would say it's time we shut down our coal plant, which is cooking the planet, and switched to renewables.
But just because politicians from the two ordinary parties refuse to listen, doesn't mean we refuse to fight. In fact, we fight harder for all the Values that Greens have. That's why we're out, every Sunday from 3 to 5 protesting the genocide being carried out against the Palestineans. That slaughter violates our Key Values of Non-Violence and Social Justice.
Feminism is another of our Key Values. June 24th marks the second anniversary of the Dobbs decision which overturned Roe V Wade and made abortion illegal and inaccessible for hundreds of millions of women. On the day of the decision in 2022, we called for protests and over 100 people showed up. We are again calling for a protest at the corner of Main and Wooster from 11 to 1 on June 24th. Bring posters and be ready to chant! Also, that evening at 7 PM, Dr. Sarah Rainey-Smithback · Director and Graduate Coordinator, Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies at BGSU, will be hosting a talk on the effect Dobbs has had on women and the larger historical context. Please come to one or both of these events on the 24th!
Next month is the Wood County Fair. We will again have our booth there, telling people about the Green Party and having fun selling vegan cookies. Please take a shift at the fair, email joe.demare@woodcountyohgreenparty.org. You get free tickets for the fair that day and you only need to take 1 four hour shift.
